<image:caption>Follow the link below to make a tax deductible donation by selecting the “Larry Pfeifer Memorial Scholarship” from the provided dropdown menu. This fund is administered by the State of Oregon’s Office of Student Access and Completion (OSAC) which administers over 600 privately funded scholarships (providing $10 million to more than 3,500 students). While any and all contributions are appreciated, we encourage you to make a commitment to recurring annual giving. To this end, we can strive to provide ongoing financial assistance for our aspiring future first responders. Making a “tax deductible” contribution means that you will be provided with a receipt for your donation which can be shown as proof, come tax season, to reduce your overall taxable income liability. You will also receive a second email confirming your gift in addition to a receipt.</image:caption>

<image:title>Scholarship</image:title>
<image:caption>Larry Pfeifer was a lifelong public servant who valued education. He was raised by working class parents in Beaverton, OR before attending Southern Oregon College (now Southern Oregon University) where he was a live-in intern with the Ashland Fire Department and spent the summers in Northern California fighting wildfires. He became a full-time firefighter/paramedic after graduating from college and eventually took a job with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue in suburban Portland. He would go on to achieve the rank of Captain and serve the community for over 20 years, up until his retirement at age 55. Over his career, Larry mentored hundreds of fledgling firefighters and encouraged them to always remain students of the craft, to continue learning new techniques to further their skills as firefighters and first responders. He impressed the pursuit of academic excellence on his children and those around him at all times. When Larry died unexpectedly at age 60, it seemed fitting to establish a scholarship in his name to assist in the schooling of the State of Oregon’s next generation of fire and EMS personnel. We invite all those pursuing a career in fire service or paramedicine who hold themselves to high academic standards to apply for this scholarship. We hope that you will work diligently to carry on Larry’s legacy of educational excellence and helping those in need in your community.</image:caption>

<image:title>Founders - Who are we?</image:title>
<image:caption>We are Lucas, Ryan, and Lindsay Pfeifer (pictured left-to-right), Larry’s three children. Following our dad’s death November 9th, 2018, we set out to find a way to keep his memory alive while continuing to support the field of fire and EMS that he dedicated his life to. Through collaboration with the Office of Student Access and Completion (OSAC), the Larry Pfeifer Memorial Scholarship was established in July 2021. Since our entire family attended public universities in the great State of Oregon, we wanted to focus on helping those who are working to launch their careers from just such institutions. Currently, Lucas (UO ‘14), a former volunteer firefighter and EMT, works as a resident physician in Southern California, Ryan (UO ‘17) is an industrial construction project manager outside of Portland, and Lindsay (UO ‘20) is a preschool teacher for underserved youth in Southern Oregon.</image:caption>

<image:title>Larry Pfeifer - Early Life</image:title>
<image:caption>Larry Alan Pfeifer was born July 20th, 1958 in Cheyenne, WY to working class parents. His father, Jack, worked as an investigator for Union Pacific Railroad while his mother Betty Lee was an office worker. The family (including older sister Michele) would progressively move west, following the railroad, until they settled for good in Beaverton, OR just outside of Portland. Larry spent most of his childhood in the Portland Metro Area and would eventually graduate from Beaverton High School, where he was on the baseball team and played trumpet in the marching band. He was also an avid skateboarder with his neighborhood friends. Larry would go on to attend Southern Oregon College (now Southern Oregon University) where he was very active in intramural sports with his large group of friends. He would graduate with his Bachelor’s in music and a Master’s in education.</image:caption>

<image:title>Larry Pfeifer - Fire Service</image:title>
<image:caption>While Larry had graduated college intending to become a music teacher, his career took a decidedly different turn. While attending SOU, he was accepted into an internship with the Ashland Fire Department where he ran calls in exchange for room and board. He spent a few summers between school years doing wildland firefighting in Southern Oregon and Northern California. Following his graduation from SOU, Larry was offered a paid position with Ashland Fire, and that would be the start of a decades long career of fire and EMS service. When it came time to move to a larger department, Larry was 1 of 4 firefighters hired out of hundreds of applicants with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue in the Portland Metro Area. He would achieve the rank of Captain and stand in as Battalion Chief on many occasions. As Captain, he could continue to work 24 hour shifts and share in parenting duties at home. He would also spend several years teaching in the Paramedic program at Oregon Health and Science University.</image:caption>

<image:title>Larry Pfeifer - Legacy</image:title>
<image:caption>Larry mentored countless young firemen and women during his time at TVF&R. While he never did become the music teacher he initially intended, he taught many EMS providers the knowledge and skills they are still using today to assist community members in need. Larry always demanded the best out of himself and held his colleagues to similarly high standards. He was also involved in numerous quality improvement projects at his department, always looking for things that could be done better and serve others more efficiently. We want to support and financially assist other industrious firefighters and EMS providers who seek to serve the people of Oregon with the Larry Pfeifer Memorial Scholarship. With this effort, Larry can continue to mentor the brotherhood of firefighters that he so dearly cared for, even though he is no longer with us.</image:caption>
